A little help from some friends.
This is a little off the normal topic of petty bickering and in-fighting, but does anyone know if it’s possible to weld "gray metal" without blowing a hole in it? I either need to find another blade guide for the ancient Craftsman band saw that I bought, or repair the old one.
May be that the good old JB weld will do the trick, may be not.
The problem is a new guide will cost around twice what I paid for the band saw... come to think of it, that could be why I was able to get it so cheep.
(The gray metal in question is the cheap crap that was cast into whatever shape the manufacturer wanted and than electroplated with another metal to make it look like it's machined. Yeah Sears.)

In practice there's no way you're going to get it done in the garage. However, you can probably drill a couple of holes into it and than back-screw a wooden guide.
Your's is a great question for the two technicians that work in our shop. I'll ask them Monday morning when they're back in. They have lots of experience fixing/repairing ancient and neglected state-owned equipment.
It's a band saw,not a table saw, and I was looking at new ones, but they were pretty expensive like $500.00 and up.
I talked to one of the technicians here at the shop and he said not to attempt to weld it if it's JB--- He said it would (literally) explode.
Hopefully you'll read this post before you fry your eyebrows off
Yeah, I just ordered another one.
Cool. When you get it, you should post some pics of it (along with anything you build).
